Las Vegas, Nev. — ABC-affiliate KTNV was honored with three Emmy Awards from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Pacific Southwest Chapter, in the following categories:
Investigative Report – Single Story or Series
• Tire Works, Darcy Spears and Ozkar Palomo — This was an investigation into allegations of deceptive trade practices at the auto repair chain that resulted in a series of reports.
Education – Single Story or Series
• Fire Watch, Darcy Spears and Ozkar Palomo — A viewer tip led to an investigation into fire guards posted outside portable classrooms in the Clark County School District. These guards were paid to watch these classrooms in case they caught on fire. Shortly after the Contact 13 investigation, the fire guard program came to an end at many of the schools.
Health/Science – Single Story or Series
• Critical Care: The Death of Jimmy Comito, Darcy Spears and Ozkar Palomo — This was an emotional story chronicling the death of 58-year-old Jimmy Comito and an investigation into the failure of the Valley’s medical system to provide critical care.
Spears and Palomo also received a National Press Club honorable mention in the Broadcast Animal Reporting Category for their 11-part hidden camera investigation into the Las Vegas Zoo. This series of reports is credited with being the catalyst for community efforts to improve conditions there.
“I am proud of their stories, and those that all of (the staff) continue to do that truly make a difference in people’s lives, and help make Las Vegas a better place to live,” said News Director Karin Movesian.
The station received an Emmy Award last year for Investigative Report News Single Story or Series, as well as one for Business/Consumer News Single Story or Series.
