Tulsa, Okla. — A new voice will be heard on 98.5 KVOO later this month when Skip Mahaffey joins the station’s morning show.
The announcement, made today, follows a six-month search.
Mahaffey is the first broadcaster to win the CMA Broadcaster Personality award three times (1996, 2001 and 2003). He also was named Billboard Magazine Air Personality of the Year in 2001. A graduate of the FBI Citizen’s Academy, he has worked extensively on events that benefit a variety of organizations and efforts, particularly those focusing on children and law enforcement.
The host of Westwood One’s Country Six Pack Specials from 1999 to 2004 along with a number of other hosting and reporting roles, Mahaffey’s career spans more than 25 years in the Country format, including WCOL in Columbus, Ohio, KSON in San Diego, Calif., and KIIM-KCUB in Tucson, Ariz. Most recently he worked for WQYK and WFUS in Tampa, Fla. In joining KVOO-FM, Mahaffey returns to his roots at the station where his career began in 1983.
“It’s rare that someone in my position in this industry has the chance to go back where it all started. I’m a lucky guy,” Mahaffey said. “So much of what I learned about doing radio, especially personality radio, I learned at KVOO from Mr. (Billy) Parker and Mr. (Jack) Crese.
“Journal Broadcast Group has gone out of their way to make me feel at home, and I am indeed fortunate to have terrific people to work with. I especially look forward to working with Sunny Leigh. Her commitment to Country music and Tulsa is extraordinary. Plus I still get to watch Billy Parker at his craft! This is gonna be fun!”
“To be able to bring a three-time CMA Award winner back to the radio station where he got his start is an opportunity that doesn’t come along often,” said 98.5 KVOO Program Director Luke Jensen. “We are thrilled to welcome Skip into the Journal Broadcast Group family and are excited for the record of success he brings with him.”
“The Skip Mahaffey Morning Show with Sunny Leigh” will air weekdays 5 - 10 a.m. beginning May 20.
KVOO-FM is one of three stations in Tulsa owned by Journal Broadcast Group.
